Here is the wiki version of this
See the question information structure in the
information architecture pages
for more details of the related information fields.
It is very important for people to intend the same meaning when asking or answering the same question,
or else comparison across people is compromised.
Clarity and simplicity are key virtues here.
The challenge is how to help people attain them.
Because most questions will be written by users,
there is always a strong possibility that the question doesn't make sense to others.
Therefore, we have, for all questions, not only the ability to refuse to answer,
but also a place to register confusion, lack of understanding, inability to answer, etc.
List of question structure types
See each one for more details.
- AORBQ: alternative preference questions
- This is for A/B choices, again with a 3- to 9-point scale.
- FACTQ: factual questions
- Any factual question to which the answer is Yes or No or Don't know.
- LEVLQ: level questions
- Like OPTSQ, but with an inherent order.
- LIKSQ: Likert scale questions
- A classic 3- to 9-point Likert scale about agreeing with a statement;
or other question structured in the same way.
- OPTSQ: option list questions
- Either only one or multiple allowed answers.
These cases are treated differently: multiple answers require more processing.
- RANGQ: position / range on metric questions
- This is for any value in a single metric, including personal height and weight.
- TRIPQ: 3 options with intermediate points
- Like AORBQ, but with the mid-point described, with a 3-, 5-, 7- or 9-point scale.
- NOT USED: qscheck: pure binary questions
- Not helpful as it tends to polarize.
