Other useful HTML tags

On this page we introduce the tags PRE and BLOCKQUOTE.

Preformatting

The preformatting tag, PRE, makes everything lay out
just as you write it in the source ... even if you
leave big spaces

or blank lines. Doing this is rather pointless.
And it gives you a fixed-width font (no choice on that).
Tags are not displayed inside PRE -
and not always interpreted (but in this case, yes).

But PRE is very useful if you want to do a simple table without using the TABLE tags, which are more complex.

Tag name | Tag description | Use
--------------|--------------------|-------------------------
PRE | Preformatting | For this kind of thing
BLOCKQUOTE | Block quotation | For a block of quoted
              | | text
h1, h2, etc. | Headings | For levels of heading

If you put try the same bit of source code without the pre you get a mess: Tag name | Tag description | Use --------------|--------------------|------------------------- PRE | Preformatting | For this kind of thing BLOCKQUOTE | Block quotation | For a block of quoted | | text h1, h2, etc. | Headings | For levels of heading

Block quotation

Most often, this is used just for a block of quoted text, which is to be indented and set apart from the rest of the text. Here is a quote from an old course booklet.

This block of text will be indented. All of text within the blockquote tags will be indented within both the left- and right-hand margins of the browser, regardless of the current width of the browser window.
It is interesting to notice how a blockquote behaves as you make the browser window narrower.

It is a really good idea to use this when quoting a chunk of someone else's work within your own.

BLOCKQUOTE can also be used to indent and separate any block of HTML, even preformatted text.
